Abstract
The Hebrew word ḥorabot (חרבות) in Job 3:14 has been the subject of much interpretive deliberation. The most common translations render it as ‘ruins’ or ‘desolate places.’ This study suggests that it refers to monumental burial sites built by kings and elites for their own burial. Through a comparative linguistic survey and a re-evaluation of historical and archaeological evidence, a potential connection between ḥorabot and the ancient Egyptian funerary concept of ‘eternal resting place’ is explored. Horus-related Egyptian expressions in biblical Hebrew strengthen the connection. This research ultimately highlights the shifting understandings of ancient Near Eastern burial ideologies, illustrating the profound influence of linguistic evolution on biblical interpretation and translation.
