Barth on Hell

Abstract

One of the most common criticisms brought against Barth's mature theology is that it entails universalism. While Barth has been defended against this charge in other places, the critique of universalism makes one wonder if Barth has any place for hell in this theology. This paper argues that Barth understands hell as God's judgment on sin, suffered once for all in Jesus Christ but still a possibility in the here and now for those who reject what Christ has done for them. As for the future of these individuals, Barth refuses to speculate.
