Abstract

This article presents a new paradigm for understanding 1 John which has as its starting point the confession that Jesus is the Christ. After critically reviewing the historical reconstructions of the opponents which determine the present paradigm, the article exegetes 1 John 2:19-23 in light of the confession that Jesus is the Christ as the it occurs in Acts. It argues that the opponents are Jews who deny that Jesus is the Christ of OT expectation who have left the Jewish community which John writes to. The final section answers possible two objections to this new paradigm: the audience is not Jewish and the Christology affirms the incarnation in light of its gentile denial.
