Abstract

Some are claiming that modern acceptance of ambition has affected the way Eritheia has been translated into English in places like James 3:14 and Philippians 2:3. This paper seeks to evaluate this claim by giving consideration to the translation task, determining the meaning of Eritheia and then looking for an English word that communicates the same sense. It is discovered that rather than ambition or even selfish ambition, Eritheia could by translated by an English word like jealousy.
